Corequisite: KIN 490. Specifically designed for students interested in exercise sciences to observe and evaluate a variety of fitness/wellness programs in the corporate, private commercial, and community settings. Factors that influence participation and adherence to fitness/wellness programs are discussed. (Formerly offered as KIN 220.)
450 Ergogenic Substances in Sport (2)
Prerequisite: a college biology course. Examination of pharmacological, physiological, and nutritional "treatments" to improve sport performance. Weekend athletes and olympians alike use these ergogenic aids. Do they work? How? What are the associated risks? What ethical questions do they present?
457 Culture, Gender, and Movement (3)
Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor. Dynamics of cultural variation and cultural dominance in non-verbal communication, skill development, sport, and dance. Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor. The interrelationship of society and sport. An examination of socially significant issues in the structure and conduct of sport. Psychological interactions among players and between players and coaches. Topics include motivation, stress control, use of reinforcement techniques, personality variables in performance. Study of the prevalent conditions which require the development of modified physical education activities to meet the needs of those exceptional students found in general physical education classes rather than in special adapted programs. 537 Physical Education for Physically/Sensory Impaired (3)

Prerequisite: KIN 536. For physical educators who wish to organize, administer, and adapt physical education activities to meet the individual needs of each physically and sensory impaired, with consideration to etiology of biomechanical, physiological, and anatomical characteristics of each handicapping condition.
538 Physical Education for Mentally/Emotionally Impaired (3)

Prerequisite: KIN 536. Movement characteristics of the mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed and learning disabled, with attention to the etiology of these disabilities. Special attention to the adaptation of physical education programs to meet the needs of each mentally impaired individual.
539 Motor Assessment of Exceptional Students (3)
Prerequisites: KIN 536 and 537. Evaluation and diagnosis of motor ability problems in physical education for exceptional students. Special attention to the variety of evaluative methods available, what they can and cannot be expected to do, and use of these devices in the development of individual education plans for physical education.
555 Exercise Prescription (3)
Prerequisite: KIN 480 or consent of instructor. Principles and practices of prescribing exercise to healthy individuals, and individuals with special conditions such as cardiac problems, asthma, diabetes, pregnancy, and specific physical disabilities. Factors that influence exercise prescriptions are discussed. Assists in preparation for ACSM certification. Classwork, two units; laboratory, one unit.
556 Exercise Electrocardiography (2)
Prerequisite: KIN 482. An introduction to clinical electrocardiography. Analysis of the electrophysiological events that lead to normal resting and exercise electrocardiograms, and electrocardiograms with abnormal rhythms, blocks, axes deviations, and myocardial infarctions. Assists in preparation for ACSM certification. Classwork, one unit; laboratory, one unit.
560 Qualitative Analysis of Movement (2)
Prerequisites: KIN 350 and one additional core course. Familiarity and experience with at least one form of movement (dance, sport, exercise) is highly recommended. Examination of a variety of notation and qualitative analytic systems as they relate to the study of movement-related questions and problems. (Formerly offered as KIN 660.)
570 Directed Coaching Experience (1)

Prerequisite: completion of six units in the coaching minor. A one season assistant coaching experience in youth athletics, recreation leagues, interscholastic or intercollegiate athletics. Site must be approved in advance. CR/NC grading only.
580 Instructional Strategies in Physical Education (3)

Prerequisite: KIN 486 or 487; must be taken concurrently with at least one practicum course. Strategies and teaching styles utilized to establish the environment for learning motor skills. Long and short term planning, class management and communication techniques, evaluation procedures, and basic legal considerations are included. (Formerly offered as KIN 380.)
584 Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries (3)

Prerequisite: three units in Philosophy or consent of instructor. Philosophical views of mind, body, wholeness, and wellness on study of human movement. Historical and cultural differences in conceptions of mind and body; influences on policy/practice in human performance and physical rehabilitation.
610 Neuromotor Control Processes (3)
Prerequisites: KIN 486 (or consent of instructor); PSY 581 or BIOL 642 is recommended. Neuromuscular control processes subserving coordination in relation to task constraints, development, learning, and rehabilitation.
620-621 Advanced Practicum in Physical Education Activities (2 each)

Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Individually directed experiences as teaching assistants in activity classes, student trainers, varsity sport managers, or special leadership assistants in the Department of Physical Education.
630 Internship in Adapted Physical Education (3)

Prerequisites: KIN 536, 537, 538, and consent of instructor. Directed experiences with exceptional individuals participating in physical education programs in schools or other agencies; supervised development of individual education plans. Includes weekly seminars. (Formerly offered as KIN 540.)
640 Field Work in Pre-Physical Therapy (3)
Prerequisites: 3.0 GPA overall and in major, BIOL 610, KIN 536, consent of instructor, liability insurance, and senior standing. Supervised clinical experience in affiliated agencies. In-depth case studies. Assignments made by course coordinator, subject to site availability. Open only to Pre-Physical Therapy majors. Liability insurance required. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisite: KIN 585 and 660 or consent of instructor. Quantitative analytic tools and techniques applied to the study of movement. Identification and measurement of biomechanical correlates as means of understanding coordination and movement strategies in the context of development, learning, performance, and rehabilitation.

Prerequisite: KIN 482 or equivalent or consent of instructor. Application of basic exercise physiology principles to the enhancement of energy capacity, work tolerance under environmental stress, metabolic basis for weight and body composition control, and aging/health-related aspects of exercise. Prerequisites: BIOL 328 and 610 or equivalent. Designed to familiarize students with basic neurophysiological and psychological factors which affect the development of skillful movement performance. Special attention is given to structuring the learning situation.
714 Exercise Physiology (3)
The physiological adaptations to exercise having significant implications for the movement and exercise sciences. 721 The Sociology of Exercise and Skill (3)
Sociocultural factors and ethical issues underlying participation in exercise and physical activity. Implications for the practitioner regarding adherence to physical activity and skill development.

Examination and analysis of psychological concepts relating to participation and optimal performance in various physical activities. Methods for the study of performance psychology; assessment techniques; applications to various populations and age groups.
772 Analysis of Human Movement (3)
Understanding movement processes through the study and analysis of human movement. Discussion of analytic techniques appropriate for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of movement.

Prerequisites: graduate standing and consent of instructor. Topic to be specified in the Class Schedule. Seminar on selected issues in human movement and exercise sciences. Prerequisites: classified graduate standing for the Master of Arts, KIN 710, 711 or equivalent, 897, and consent of graduate major adviser. An approved thesis of research in physical education.
