700 Introduction to Graduate Study (4)

Introduction to research and research methodologies--the differences between graduate and undergraduate study. The language and tools for controlled and systematic investigation of speech communication phenomena. Preparation of a research proposal.

721 Seminar in Rhetorical and Communication Theory (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 300 or equivalent. Intensive study of issues in rhetorical and communication theory and practice from the classical period to the present with special emphasis on primary work. Research project required.

731 Seminar in Communication and Social Criticism (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 302 or equivalent. Intensive study of contemporary persuasion, propaganda, social control, political leadership, and the rhetorical dimensions of social events. Research project required.

740 Seminar in Communication and Human Interaction (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 303 or equivalent. Intensive study of intra- and interpersonal variables necessary to the understanding of human interaction including both verbal and non-verbal phenomena. Research project required.

745 Gender and Communication (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 503 or consent of instructor. Critical evaluation of theory and research regarding the role of gender in communication. An examination of such factors as manifestations of power, politeness, intimacy, and play in the communication styles of females and males.

750 Seminar in Communication and Culture (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 700 or consent of instructor. Intensive study of methodologies appropriate to the study of communicative styles within, between and among cultural groups and across gender lines and their effect on intergroup contact. Research project required.

751 Intercultural Communication Training (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 700 or consent of instructor. Recommended: SPCH 750 or 760. Assessing organizational needs to improve relationships among cultural groups; designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs to provide necessary communication skills to improve intercultural relations.

760 Seminar in Organizational Communication (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 521 or equivalent. Intensive study of theories, research methods, and practices or organizational communication and development from the perspective of the process consultant. A case study report based on personal experience in an organization setting is required.

770 Special Methods of Research (4)

Topic to be specified in Class Schedule. In-depth exploration of a particular research methodology: e.g., experiment, field study, historical/critical. Requires completion of a method-specific research project.

771 Communication Research Strategies (4)

Provides the student with basic empirical research skills in communication. The design of studies, computer analysis of data, and preparation of research reports are learned through theory and practice. Practical applications of research are emphasized. Paired with SPCH 661. Students who have completed SPCH 661 may not take SPCH 771 for credit.

772 Field Research Strategies (4)

Prerequisite: SPCH 700 or consent of instructor. An ethnographic approach to studying communication through the use of a variety of qualitative methods including participant/observation, interviewing, conversation analysis, and unobtrusive measures. Each student conducts a field research project during the semester.

850 Seminar in Teaching Speech Communication (4)

Prerequisite: classified graduate standing or consent of instructor. Introduces students to concepts, principles, and skills in teaching speech communication. Focuses on assessing student needs, designing instructional models, writing instructional objectives, constructing evaluative measures, and reviewing the theory of interpersonal, small group, and public communication.

851 Internship in Teaching Speech Communication (2)

Corequisite: SPCH 850. Application of concepts of effective oral communication, techniques for evaluating/diagnosing oral communication proficiency, materials/teaching methods for basic oral communication courses in classroom setting under direction of an experienced instructor. CR/NC grading only.

852 Supervision of Teaching Speech Communication (1)

Prerequisite: teaching assignment in college level oral communication course. Designed to supplement teaching experience with appropriate supervision and training in curriculum, teaching techniques, grading procedures, etc. Repeatable once for credit. CR/NC grading only.

855 Coaching Forensics (4)

Seeks to train students in coaching/teaching undergraduate forensics for speech and debate competition. Focus on value debate theory, with research to assess the effectiveness of this theory in forensic practice. May include field research off-campus for two or three weekends.

880 Studies in Contemporary Theory (4)

Topic to be specified in Class Schedule. An intensive study of the work of contemporary theorists in the field of communication. Analysis of the place and importance of the theorist in the discipline. Research project required.

890 Integrative Seminar in Speech and Communication Studies (4)

For master's candidates preparing culminating projects in the last semester of study. Integrating and synthesizing theoretical issues of speech and communication studies as represented in the respective theses, creative works, and comprehensives. Survey of vocational and further study opportunities–state of the field.

894 Creative Work Project (3)

Prerequisite: advancement to candidacy for the master's degree. An original creative work project which must be developed with the approval of the major adviser. It must be finally described in a written document that summarizes the project's significance, objectives, creative methodology, and conclusions or recommendations. Graduate Approved Program and Proposal for Culminating Experience Requirement forms must be approved by the Graduate Division before registration.

898 Master's Thesis (3)

Prerequisite: advancement to candidacy for the master's degree and recommendation of major adviser. An intensive, systematic study of a significant topic or problem in Speech Communications. The final written work must evidence originality, critical and independent thinking, and relevant conclusions. Graduate Approved Program and Proposal for Culminating Experience Requirement forms must be approved by the Graduate Division before registration.

899 Advanced Problems for Investigation in Speech and Communication Studies (1-3)

Prerequisites: consent of the graduate major adviser and the supervising faculty member. Study is planned, developed, and completed under the direction of a member of the faculty. Open only to graduate students of demonstrated ability to do independent work. Enrollment by petition.
