DESIGNATED SUBJECTS CREDENTIALS
This credential authorizes the holder to teach in the subject or trade in which the
applicant has demonstrated competency and at such grade level as approved by the
Commission and designated on the credential.
Designated subjects include Adult Education and Vocational Education.
Inquiries pertaining to the above designated subjects should be directed to the Center
for Adult Education (415) 338-1083.
The minimum requirements for all Designated Subjects Credentials are:
- Possession of a high school diploma or the equivalent as designated by the Commission.
- Adequate, successful, and recent experience in the subject or technical trade, skill, or
vocation named on the credential. A schedule of the amount of education or training
required in relation to years of subject-related experience may be found in the
Credential Programs Bulletin.
- A passing score on the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)—Academic
Subjects Only
- A program of personalized inservice training to provide preparation as designed by the
Commission.
DESIGNATED SUBJECTS ADULT EDUCATION CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary Full-Time Adult Education Credential
- Five years experience or B.A. degree and education related to the subjects to be named
on the credential.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). (Required for academic subjects only.)
- U.S. Constitution requirement. (Not required for one-year preliminary credential.)
- Completion of ISED 606, Seminar in Principles and Methods of Adult Education (4)
(satisfies four units residence requirement)
Clear Full-Time Adult Education Credential
- Hold preliminary credential.
- Two years full-time experience on preliminary.
- Nine semester units or 135 clock hours of personalized preparation as follows:
ISED 606 Seminar in Principles and Methods of Adult Education (4)
ISED 661 Supervised Field Experiences in Designated Subjects (2)
ISED 681 Seminar to Accompany Field Experiences in Designated Subjects

- Completion of one semester unit of health education dealing with drug/alcohol abuse
and nutrition and CPR. The CPR requirement can be met by completion of the American
Heart Association: Level B or the American Red Cross: Community CPR course. CPR
certification must be valid at the time the professional clear credential application is
submitted.

DESIGNATED SUBJECTS VOCATIONAL EDUCATION CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary Full-Time Vocational Education Credential
- Five years experience/training/education in the subject to be named on the credential,
one during the last three years. (Forty-eight semester units or the equivalent or post-
secondary vocational training may be substituted for a maximum of two of the five years
experience.)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of the U.S. Constitution requirement. (Not required for the one-year
preliminary credential.)
- Completion of ISED 606 Seminar in Principles and Methods of Adult Education (4) (satisfies
four units residence requirement)
