ACADEMIC CHECKLIST
The following is a summary of the SFSU graduation requirements for award of the
baccalaureate degree. Also included are restrictions that a student must "consider"
when taking course work toward the degree. This summary is not intended as a
comprehensive explanation of courses or policies. Detailed explanations of each of the
requirements are included in the pages following this checklist. Remember: the date of
planned graduation will be delayed if these requirements are not completed in a timely
manner and in accordance with the policies as stated below. Students should
periodically review their progress toward meeting degree requirements with their
advisers.

RESTRICTIONS TO BE CONSIDERED
- Maximum Units in One Subject Field: 60 units
- Maximum Units Through Extension or Correspondence: 24 units
- Maximum Units for Community College Work: 70 units
- Maximum Units by Examination or Evaluation: 30 units
- Maximum Units CR/NC: 30% of total units earned at SFSU. See major department for
further restrictions.
- Maximum Units in One Semester: 19 units (Written approval must be received to exceed
the 19 unit limit)
- Maximum Units Double-Counted Between Major and GE: 12 units. [Remember, the units
may be counted only once.]
REQUIREMENTS TO BE COMPLETED
ENTRY LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Entry Level Mathematics (ELM)—a prerequisite to GE Quantitative reasoning at SFSU
- English Placement Test (EPT)—a prerequisite to ENG 114 and other composition courses
- English as a Second Language Placement Test (ESLPT)—a prerequisite to SFSU–ESL courses
COMPETENCY/SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS
- ENG 114 or equivalent or ENG 208/209 (ESL)
- ENG 214 or equivalent or ENG 310 (ESL)
- JEPET
- ENG 414 (if JEPET fail) or 410/411 (ESL)
- U.S. History and Government Requirement—6 units, or equivalent courses/examinations
- SFSU Library Requirement (Self-Paced Workbook or equivalent)
UNIT REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum units required to graduate
B.A. = 124 semester units minimum
B.S. = 124-132 semester units minimum

- Residence Requirement: 30 units minimum at SFSU, including: 24 units upper division, 12
units in major (lower or upper division), and 9 units in GE, Segment III.
- Upper Division Requirement: 40 units minimum, including 24 at SFSU, 9 of which must be in
GE, Segment III
GRADE POINT AVERAGE
- Minimum Grade Point Average: 2.0 in all college work, in SFSU work, and in major [Divide
total grade points by total units attempted]

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- 48 units minimum. Special requirements apply to each Segment and Area of the GE
Program. Transfer students are subject to different GE requirements than are students
who were admitted to SFSU as first-time freshmen. See GE section in this Bulletin for
specific policies.
SEGMENT I: BASIC SUBJECTS [12 units minimum]
- Written Communication: 3 units
- Oral Communication: 3 units
- Critical Thinking: 3 units
- Quantitative Reasoning: 3 units
SEGMENT II: ARTS AND SCIENCES [27 units minimum]
- Physical and Biological Sciences—9 units including one course designated (L/F),
laboratory/field study (transfers refer to ASE)
- Behavioral and Social Sciences—9 units minimum with at least 2 different course prefixes
- Humanities and Creative Arts—9 units minimum with at least 2 different course prefixes
- Lifelong Development Requirement (LLD)—one course (included above)
- American Ethnic and Racial Minorities Requirement (AERM)—one course (included
above) [Required on Freshman Pattern only]
SEGMENT III: RELATIONSHIPS OF KNOWLEDGE [9 units minimum]
- 9 upper division units minimum taken at SFSU (Taken during or after the semester in which
upper division standing is achieved—60 units, but not before)
