SEGMENT III: RELATIONSHIPS OF KNOWLEDGE

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: All students who enter SFSU in Fall, 1991, and thereafter MUST:

  1. Complete at least nine units of upper division course work in residence at SFSU in a single Segment III cluster.
  2. Begin the Segment III course work during or after the semester in which upper division junior standing is achieved (i.e., 60 semester units), but not before.
  3. Begin their Segment III course work only after completing all General Education Segment I requirements: Written Communications, Critical Thinking, Oral Communications, and Quantitative Reasoning. The purpose of this requirement is to assure that students acquire a solid foundation of basic competencies early in their academic careers as preparation for further course work required for the baccalaureate degree.
  4. Complete the courses in a single Segment III cluster in accordance with that cluster's special requirements.
  5. Complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that is both outside the major department and outside the major program submitted on the student's "Application for Graduation."
  6. Complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that fulfills the Cultural, Ethnic, and Social Diversity (CESD) Requirement.
  7. Expect to complete a significant writing component in each Segment III course.
  8. Courses taken to fulfill Segment III cluster requirements may not also be used to fulfill Segment II requirements or the U.S. History and Government requirements.
EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY
Students who are entitled to an earlier SFSU Bulletin may complete a Segment III cluster and its requirements as printed in that Bulletin. Reference copies of earlier Bulletins are available in the Library; the undergraduate Advising Center, ADM 212; and the Office of Undergraduate Studies, ADM 449. However, students who have not yet started Segment III are encouraged to adopt the currently approved clusters. If a student chooses to complete a cluster in this Bulletin, s/he MUST follow all special requirements as currently written.
