General Education Program (Continued)


SEGMENT III: RELATIONSHIPS OF KNOWLEDGE (9 units)

General Requirements

Students subject to the 1991-92 Bulletin or later Bulletins must:

  1. Complete at least nine units of upper division course work in residence at SFSU in a single Segment III cluster. (See alphabetical listing of clusters below.)
  2. Begin their Segment III course work during or after the semester in which they achieve upper division junior standing (i.e., 60 semester units), but NOT before.
  3. Begin their Segment III course work only after completing all General Education Segment I requirements.
  4. Fulfill all of the specific requirements for completing the cluster.
  5. Complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that is both outside the major department and outside the major program submitted on the official Application for Graduation.
  6. Complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that is designated as fulfilling the Cultural, Ethnic, or Social Diversity (CESD) Requirement.

NOTE: Courses taken at SFSU to fulfill Segment III cluster requirements may not also be used to fulfill Segment II requirements or the U.S. History and Government requirement, including the California State and Local Government component.

Students who have rights to an earlier SFSU Bulletin may complete Segment III clusters and requirements as printed in that Bulletin. Reference copies of earlier Bulletins are available in the Library; the Undergraduate Advising Center, ADM 212; the Office of Undergraduate Studies, ADM 447; and on-line from the SFSU home page beginning with the 1994-96 Bulletin. All courses listed are three units unless otherwise noted.

Study Abroad: Exploring Cultural, Ethnic, or Social Diversity from Multidisciplinary Perspectives (9 units minimum)

Specific Requirements: Students in CSU-approved Study Abroad programs may complete their Segment III requirements while they gain a structured and interdisciplinary understanding of their host country. Courses used to meet Segment III requirements through Study Abroad must be approved before the students leave SFSU for their Study Abroad assignments by the Study Abroad cluster coordinator.

Students must complete a minimum of 9 units, including at least three courses taken during Study Abroad. Select one or two courses from Category A, one or two courses from Category B, and one course from Category C. At least one course from categories A and B must focus centrally on issues of cultural, ethnic, or social diversity. Courses that combine the approach of two or more disciplines are appropriate, as are ethnic studies courses.
