University Magazine now online
June 23, 2008 -- The newly released spring/summer 2008 issue provides a glimpse of the University's recently approved master plan, which envisions more green space, new housing, teaching and research facilities, and improved connections to the surrounding community -- all with an emphasis on environmental sustainability.
The plan will provide the framework for the collaboration, research, learning
and creativity that continues to spark success for students, faculty and
alumni. In "Moving
Pictures," alumnus and award-winning
filmmaker Arthur Dong discusses his days as a student at SF State and his
latest well-received documentary, "Hollywood Chinese." Dong's career
provided the inspiration for a new SF State Magazine version of the popular
"Six
Degrees of Separation" Hollywood connections game. Other successful
alumni stories are the subject of "Minding
Your Own Business," a feature that shows
how eight alumni created thriving businesses.
In addition to these features, stories in the Campus Beat section include a look at the new Willie Brown Jr. Leadership Center at SF State and news of the University's first Guardian Scholar graduate. The issue's other "firsts" news includes a first for Jewish Studies and a look at the career of the first woman commander of a U.S. commissioned naval vessel. Read on to see which two Gators will be competing for the U.S. at the Olympics in Beijing this summer and see how one graduate helped transform the diagnosis of eye disease.
Copies of the magazine are also available at several campus locations including the information desks at the Cesar Chavez Student Center and Administration building. The SF State Magazine Web site also includes an easy way to send a class note or letter to the editor.
