The College of Health and Social Sciences was established in the Fall of 1994. It is organized into the following administrative areas: Child and Adolescent Development; Clinical Laboratory Science; Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics; Counseling; Criminal Justice; Environmental Studies; Gerontology; Health Education; Kinesiology; Nursing; Physical Therapy; Public Administration; Recreation, Parks, and Tourism; Sexuality Studies; Social Work; Sociology; and Urban Studies and Planning.
Mission of the College of Health and Social Sciences
The College of Health and Social Sciences prepares students to help solve the most pressing and enduring issues confronting the well-being of individuals, families, communities and society. Students, faculty and staff participate in a learning process that fosters excellence in their professions and supports them in the pursuit of equity and social justice. To advance this mission, the College is committed to innovative teaching, scholarship and service that inspires leadership for positive social change.

Scholarly teaching and student success are at the heart and foundation of the College of Health and Social Sciences’ public education mission. To this end, the College fosters excellence in teaching and develops faculty members whose passion for teaching is the spark for the personal, professional and intellectual growth of both our students and ourselves. In addition to disciplinary expertise being a prerequisite to effective teaching, the College believes that scholarly teaching is grounded in the ability to engage students in translating knowledge to meaning, relevance, and application in their personal and professional lives.

Pupil Personnel Services (offered by Counseling and Social Work) are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Curricula in the college meet high academic standards. All of the programs subject to national accreditation are accredited: Clinical Laboratory Science by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences; Counseling by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs; Dietetics by The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Apparel Design and Merchandising, Dietetics, Interior Design and Family and Consumer Sciences by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; Subject Matter Preparation in Physical Education Accredited/Approved by CTC (California Commission on Teacher Credentialing); Added Authorization Credential Program in Adapted Physical Education; Health Education B.S. and Masters of Public Health by the Council on Education for Public Health, Nursing by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; Physical Therapy by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education; Recreation, Parks and Tourism; Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (COAPRT), Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling by the Council on Rehabilitation Education; and Social Work by the Council on Social Work Education. Nursing is also approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. The Gerontology program meets the guidelines of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE).
