General Education: Segments I and II

Segment III: Relationships of Knowledge – 9 units minimum

Please note: These requirements reflect University Executive Directive 09-35, the Executive Directive to Facilitate Graduation.

General Requirements

Students must:

Complete at least nine units of upper division course work in residence at SF State
Complete at least two courses in one Segment III cluster. The third course must be selected either within the same cluster or from any other Segment III cluster.
Begin their Segment III course work only after completing all General Education Segment I requirements.
Begin their Segment III course work upon completion of Segment I and a total of at least 30 units of Segment I and Segment II GE, but NOT before. Please note, all course prerequisites should be met.
Complete at least one course in Segment III that is both outside the major department and outside the major program submitted on the official Application for Graduation.
Complete at least one course in Segment III that is designated as fulfilling the Cultural, Ethnic, or Social Diversity (CESD) Requirement.

Note: Each cluster except the Study Abroad cluster includes a “Recommended Pattern,” designed to provide an integrative upper division experience. Although not required, students are encouraged to complete a recommended pattern if possible. In the case of the Study Abroad cluster, students must complete the pattern as written.

Study Abroad: Exploring Cultural, Ethnic, or Social Diversity from Multidisciplinary Perspectives

Students in CSU-approved Study Abroad programs may complete their Segment III requirements while they gain a structured and interdisciplinary understanding of their host country. Courses used to meet Segment III requirements through Study Abroad must be approved before the students leave SF State for their Study Abroad assignments.

Required Pattern: Students must complete a minimum of 9 units, including at least 6 units taken during Study Abroad. At least one course must be taken from Category A and one from Category B. Students may select a third course from the courses taken abroad or from the approved Segment III courses in other clusters, with subject matter related to the student's study abroad experience.
